Citizens' Advisory Committee Minutes

Welcome and Roll Call: 6:32pm - Chair Jason Biance opened the meeting and welcomed those attending the meeting.

Roll Call

Members present: Jason Biance, Wendy Amos, Chet Brojek, David Burnham, Tiffany Green, Diane Juve, and Vicki Musselman.
Members absent: Lisa Branca, Velma Lumpkin, Curt Matthews, John Shoop, Peggy Sueppel, Maritza Telesky, Jennifer Waltman, and Joe Wright. District Staff/Board present: Brenda Longshore, Mike Averyt, Frank Brown, Willie Hills, Darrel Layfield, Harry Howes, and Donna Howerton.

Approval of Minutes:

Chet Brojek made the motion to approve the minutes for March 25, 2019 CAC meeting. Diana Juve seconded the motion. The motion passed with a unanimous vote.

Introduction of New Officers:

Chair Jason Biance introduced to the committee the new slate of officers:

  • Chairman: Jason Biance

  • Vice Chairman: Diane Juve

  • Secretary: Wendy Amos

Presentation of Income and Expenditures:

Chair Jason Biance presented a Powerpoint of the revenue and expenditures by fiscal year. To date, $15,207,845.69 of total revenue has been received. Total expenditures are $12,475,790.76. Chair Biance also reported on hurricane repairs expenditures in the amount of $1,409,229.75. All documents reported on are attached, and made part of these minutes.

Department Updates and Reports:

Transportation – Mr. Willie Hills, Director of Transportation, reported that the buses would soon be outfitted with the tracking devices.

Facilities – Mr. Frank Brown, Director of Facilities, reported on gates and fencing - approximately, 1.5 million in security fencing. There was a general discussion of what other work may need to be accomplished.

Technology - Mr. Darrell Layfield, Director of MIS, reported a total of 1500 Chromebooks for students and 100 laptops for teachers are in use. Needs are: projectors and displays – approximately $400 each; Roku televisions – approximately $365 each. Harry Howes reported that older Chromebooks, that are no longer supported, can be used in the elementary schools due to the fact that those students do not have the state requirement for testing. A CAC member expressed an opinion that each student should be allowed to take their Chromebooks home over the summer to assure getting the same computer the next school year. Mr. Layfield explained the system in place that assures each student’s Chromebook is returned to them at the beginning of the school year.

Calendar of Meetings:

Discussion of upcoming meeting schedule – an inquiry about the annual school board walk-thru of all campuses in January was discussed. The committee agreed that the next CAC meeting should be prior to the walk-thru. December 9th at 5:30pm was approved as the next meeting date.

Other Business:

The need for new CAC members was discussed. The application will be mailed to present members to aid in finding new members. The State Superintendent of Schools will be in Sebring during a “Walking Tour” of the State. The public meeting will be a Sebring Middle School on Monday, October 7th, at 5:30pm.
