Citizens Advisory Committee Minutes

Place: School Board of Highlands County, 426 School Street, Sebring, FL - Basic Training Room

Welcome announcements - Dr. Brenda Longshore, Superintendent of Schools welcomed all committee members and thanked them for their support in passing the 1/2 cent sales tax.

Roll Call of Members - Members present: Jason Biance, Chet Brojek, David Burnham, Kay Ferguson, Tiffany Green, Ned Hancock, Diane Juve, Olimpia Lonsdale, Velma Lumpkin, Curt Matthews, Maritza Telesky, Jennifer Walktman, and Joe Wright. The following members were absent: Wes Hollan and John Shoop.

School Board Staff and Attorney:
Brenda Longshore, Mike Averyt, Frank Brown, David Solomon, Harry Howes, Darrell Layfield, and John McClure

Explanation of Citizens Committee Responsibilities - John McClure, School Board Attorney reviewed the resolution establishing the Citizens Advisory Committee. He stressed the importance of the sunshine law and public meetings. He stated the main purpose of the committee was to be an oversite committee which reviews expenditures to insure the School Board was spending the money as approved by the voters in the 1/2 cent Sales tax resolution as well as make recommendations to the Board concerning the project list.

Election of Officers - John McClure took nominations to elect officers for the Citizens Committee. The following members were nominated and unanimously approved by the Committee:

Chairman - Jason Biance
Vice Chairman - Tiffany Green
Secretary - Diane Juve

Review of five year capital outlay plan - Mike Averyt, Assistant Superintendent for Business/Operations reviewed the preliminary project list with the committee. Harry Howes and Darrell Layfield discussed student computers and David Solomon discussed the purchase of buses and the white fleet vehicles.

Next Meeting Date - The Committee approved Monday, February 13, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. at the School Board Office as the next scheduled meeting date.

Adjourn - The meeting was adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
